It is always recommended when moving home to plan a few days before so that you give yourself enough time to get packed and move. Whatever you may think, packing isn’t plain sailing. You are more than likely to face a variety of problems especially when it comes to big and small items. Packing small items efficiently can help keep your belongings organised and prevent them from getting lost or damaged. Here are some tips to help you pack small items effectively.
Choosing the Right Materials
When it comes to smaller items, this isn’t necessarily something that we think about. Of course it is a given that for larger items you will need the right packing materials but smaller, and more fragile items you will also need to make sure you have the correct packing materials to avoid breakages.
As well as the right packing materials, you will also have to take extra care when it comes to smaller items as they are prone to break. You can check out these 6 quick packing tips for moving house for more handy suggestions on what works best.
Use Small Containers and Bags
Ziplock bags are ideal for keeping small items such as jewellery, toiletries, or electronics accessories organised and visible, so you won’t have to spend ages rummaging through your boxes to find your favourite jewellery piece. Pill organisers are also great for storing small jewellery pieces, or tiny hardware, alongside plastic containers that are perfect for fragile items, or anything that needs that extra protection.

Small Boxes
When it comes to packing and moving home, we assume we can just stick it all in one box and it be over with. However, that isn’t the case. Smaller items can benefit from their own smaller boxes. Make sure that the boxes you use too are sturdy and durable. Choose corrugated boxes or reuse any plastic ones that you already have. Pill organisers are also great for storing small jewellery pieces, medication, or tiny hardware.

Bubble Wrap
Bubble wrap is your friend when it comes to packing – especially for small fragile items. This will help avoid your items from knocking in transit and give an added layer of protection. Use bubble wrap or soft cloths to wrap delicate items before placing them in containers.
Paper
Paper can also be a good way of protecting your small items. We suggest using both just for added protection. There are a range of different papers that you can use such as kraft paper, baking paper and greaseproof. Greaseproof offers a moisture protection layer to your items which is especially good if you are moving in colder months, however, the strongest paper to use is kraft paper.

Pack Small Tools with Bigger Items
Small tools like screwdrivers and scissors are best packed with your larger items such as furniture, as you will have everything in one place when it comes to unpacking. However, don’t just chuck them in. Pack them in a small bag or box and attach to the inside of your furniture if there is a place to do so.
Reuse and Recycle
Another way to store items is by repurposing containers. For example, old mint tins, film canisters, or other small containers to store tiny items—perfect for earrings! Consider using eco-friendly packing materials and reusable containers to reduce waste.
