When planning for your big move, the whole process can become highly stressful. Moving involves lots of planning and with that comes organisation. Whether you’ve chosen a household removals company, or choosing to do it all yourself, you should start planning your move properly.

  1. If you are on a limited budget it is best to draw up a plan in order to make things doable. Firstly you should start in one room and stay in that room. Label the boxes and even colour code each one as you go along, so you are able to identify the contents and its designated room when unpacking them later on. Check out 6 quick packing tips for moving house to help speed up this process.

  2. If you have a busy work/life balance or not enough time to pack things yourself, then hiring a removal company is probably best option for you. This will give you time to focus on other aspects of moving, such as sorting out paperwork, keys and arranging that all important moving-in party. If you are packing the boxes yourself, ensure your pack them correctly according to its contents. Very fragile items should be wrapped in bubble wrap to avoid any damage. Then place in a box with extra cushioning for extra care. After everything is placed in the box and taped up, write a label on the outside to direct your household removals company or helper on which way to correctly hold the box. For more on this, see our house removals checklist.

  3. Remember, you are in control of your move so be sure to stay on top of things and let the removal company know how YOU want things to run. If you want to reduce stress during your move, we have tips to help manage the pressure.

  4. Once the removal day comes, make sure you keep some essential day-to-day items close by. This can be a kettle for those in dire need of a cup of tea during the move, as well as your overnight essentials. Anything you believe you will need for the first night and morning should be made accessible from the get-go. Our first night new house checklist can help you prepare for this.
