1. Start Early
Starting your preparations early is the best thing you can do in preparing for the big move. Plan the move date at least six weeks in advance and finalise with your removal company near Chester. If you’re moving over the weekend, it’s recommended you book the Monday off work. You’ll be thankful for this day just to get all those essentials unpacked.
Start collecting boxes as soon as you can. Fill two big boxes with old newspapers and bubble wrap and flat pack and store away the others until you need them for more sorting space. If you have a load of boxes lying around, you’ll be tempted to start filling them as soon as you can but having method will better in the long run.
Prepare a checklist. Think of the things that will need to be organised in the weeks and days running up to the big move. Banks, utility companies, insurance etc. will all need to be informed of your new address.
2. Clear Out Before, Not After You Move
One of the biggest mistakes house movers make is thinking that they will sort things out once they’ve moved in. But packing and hauling unwanted items makes no sense. If you want a fresh start, it’s important to clear out as early as possible. Need help getting rid of stuff? Check out this article on things to do when moving house.
Getting rid of clothes? Some swear by the six-month rule: unless it’s special occasion wear, if you haven’t worn something in the last six months, it’s not worth keeping. Categorise your wardrobe into work, everyday, and less-often-worn, then pack away the latter first.
3. Pack by Categories, Not by Rooms
An easy mistake is to pack room by room. It makes more sense to pack by category—books, DVDs, decorations—so unpacking is quicker and smoother. You might also find helpful packing insights in this guide: how to pack for moving home.
4. Staging
If you haven’t sold your home yet, staging is highly recommended. To make a strong impression, remove clutter and leave only a few items to create a spacious yet welcoming feel. For staging pointers, see this staging-focused post: top tips on preparing to sell your home.
5. Letting Others Know
A simple yet personal way to announce your move is to send postcards featuring your new home. If you’re after ideas for what to do next—or what to include—check this “what to do with your packing materials after you move” article: what to do with your packing materials after you move.
