Moving home can leave you in limbo for a while, especially as you have to adjust to a new way of living, as well as a new area. It all can be a little overwhelming, so getting to grips on how your new home works for you is imperative.
Over the years we all accumulate furniture and household items, and sometimes it can feel impossible to find space for them when you first move into your new home, even if you have decluttered beforehand.
To minimise stress and to avoid moving everything in straight away, we suggest using lockup storage or self-storage to hold your goods temporarily, until you can decide what should go where. Of course, you won’t need to put everything in temporary storage, but things that you don’t need right away for day-to-day life, it can help a great deal.
What to put in storage
Deciding what you should keep and what to get rid of can be very challenging and harder than you first might think. However, once you have gone through your lists of what you should and shouldn’t take with you, you will be left with a number of items that you don’t currently have a place for in your new home. This is where temporary storage comes in handy.
To help you make an informed decision of things that you should consider for storage we have compiled a list below.
Furniture

Furniture is one of the most common items to put into storage as they can be rather bulky and take up a lot of space.
Firstly, you may not have enough space in your new home and secondly you may want to decide how your home works for you first before moving everything in right away.
Also, another reason to move furniture for temporary storage is if you are in the process of selling it on as it is no longer fit for purpose in your new home.
Furniture can include:
- Beds
- Mattresses
- Tables and chairs
- Patio furniture
Seasonal Items

Consider putting seasonal items into storage such as clothes, shoes, accessories etc. simply because you will only need these for a few months at a time. It gives you time to again think about what you want to do with your seasonal belongings for that period of time until you need to bring them out again.
Consider storing away:
- Clothes and shoes
- Seasonal equipment such as swimming pools and even summer and winter tires.
- Holiday decorations that are only needed once a year
Large household appliances

Dishwashers, washing machines and ovens can be big and heavy and you may find you don’t have enough room for them in your home – especially if your home already has these built in. Consider using temporary storage until you decide what to do with them.
Files and documents

Files and documents can surprisingly take up a lot of space especially if you haven’t had the time to go through everything and throw away what you no longer need. Many files and documents aren’t needed everyday so storing them in a safe place is you best bet.
Books and magazines

Over the years we can accumulate books and magazines especially if you are a bit of a bookworm. Before you decide to throw out all your favourite reads, place them in storage for the time-being until you find a home for them or decide whether to sell them on.
Collectibles
Some of us have precious collectibles that we daren’t part from. Putting these in storage until you find a better way to display them in your home is the sensible idea as it stops them from getting damaged from moving them from place to place or sticking them in a dusty corner until you get round to that bit.
