No one gears you up for what it’s like moving home but amongst the excitement, it can be equally as stressful. You’ve got boxes, packing tape and paperwork everywhere, but to help with easing into your new home, add an essentials box to your very long to-do list.
Having some moving essentials to hand will make moving home a breeze. Your essentials box will be your handy go-to kit so you’re not frantically searching for necessities on the day. When you keep all your essentials together everything becomes a lot less chaotic and keeps you focused on unpacking and getting settled.
Of course, every family is different in their essential needs but we have listed a few common ones below.
Clean bedding and pillows
There’s nothing worse than having to search around late at night for clean bedding and pillows after a long day of moving home. Some moves take longer than others meaning some are more tiring and all you want to do is have a quick power nap to get back to it. We all love clean, fresh bedsheets too so have some ready on move in day and you’ll soon start feeling at home.
Cleaning supplies
No matter how clean the house looks, you’ll be surprised how much dust and dirt there actually is. Make sure you pack up a few cleaning essentials so you can give your home a once over before moving everything in, or if you prefer, clean as you go. Here are a few items that we suggest:
- Sponges
- Washing up liquid
- Hand soap
- Paper towels
- All-purpose cleaner
- Dustpan and brush
- Work clothes or rags

Toolkit & Torches
Having a basic toolkit at hand is essential when moving home. If you had to disassemble furniture prior to your move you’ll need the right tools to put it together again when you arrive. Plus, you never know when you need a pair of pliers or hammer too so having this put aside for moving day is a must. As well as a toolkit it is also wise to have some torches on hand just in case lights aren’t working or the electricity goes out.
Reminder: Keep all your screws and fittings in a safe place.
Paper, Pens, Tape and Scissors
Much like before moving you will also need to make sure you have paper, pens, tape, and scissors to hand when moving in. If you are recruiting help from your friends and family with moving in, why not label each room so they know where to put the corresponding boxes. When it comes to scissors we recommend having more than one pair so you can easily get boxes open and start unpacking.
