Preparing to Move Out of a Rented Property
Like any move, moving out of a house or a flat that you are renting can take a huge amount of time to organise – especially before moving day. One thing that you should bear in mind when you are renting is to ensure you get all your deposit back from your landlord. Depending on the state that you leave the property in, your landlord may deduct some of your deposit from you if they need this to fix anything you may have done to the property.
Returning the Property to Its Original State
Landlords have the right to have their property returned in its original state from when a tenant has moved in, meaning, any decoration that you have carried out, be it wallpapering or painting – it should be returned back to its original state if you wish to get your deposit back.
Hiring Help or Doing It Yourself
There are many different ways you can avoid having your deposit deducted – by making sure your property is clean after you leave. Some cleaning companies offer this service to tenants and will cover a number of jobs in your home so you have extra time that can be spent packing.
Essential Cleaning Supplies
If you are planning to crack on with the cleaning yourself there are a few essentials you need including:
- Rubber gloves, sponges & cleaning cloths – to make cleaning that much easier!
- Surface cleaners – wipes and bleach sprays are good to tackle dirt and grime
- Floor cleaner – for hard floors such as tiles, wood and laminate. Also, it is good to bear in mind carpet stains too – carpet cleaners are readily available from lots of supermarkets
- Window cleaner – make sure your windows are clean – including mirrors and tables if they belong in the property
- Bin bags (plenty of them) – when packing up your stuff you are likely to come across things that you don’t need anymore including old bills. You’ll be surprised how much junk you have to throw out when you move so make sure you are prepare
- Polish and dusters – To get rid of any dust on window sills, and pesky cobwebs
Cleaning from Top to Bottom
When starting to clean out your home it’s best to start top to bottom – and we don’t just mean the top of the house. The ceiling is the best place to start – which may sound odd but once we tell you why it’ll be a no brainer! Ceilings can surprisingly collect a lot of dust and cobwebs especially if your ceiling has rustic beams or is aertex. When cleaning your ceiling it is very likely that the dust is going to fall so cleaning your carpets would have been pointless at this point. If you’re moving with pets, remember to clean any pet hair from furnishings!
Don’t Forget the Windows
Next, move on to your windows. Windows of course need to be cleaned not only outside but inside too. It is best to start on the upstairs first and work your way down in case of any drips to the lower windows. Some upstairs windows can be a little difficult to clean the outside so you may want to consider hiring a professional window cleaner to do these for you.
Final Touches Before You Leave
The next thing to do would be to clean the walls – repaint where necessary. You will need to then look at cleaning floors and even your doors.
The important thing to remember is how your property was when you first entered it – making sure any scuffs and marks are dealt with before moving out to ensure you receive your full deposit.
