So you’ve finally taken the plunge and have decided to move. You’ve chosen your lovely new home but where do you start when it comes to packing and actually moving? Whether it’s your first or your fifth time, moving can be really exciting, however, you can get overwhelmed with the stresses of moving day as it creeps closer. Like any big life event, planning is key and its good to organise your move and plan ahead. See our step-by-step guide on how to make your move stress free and successful.

Step 1 – Decide how to move

The first decision you will need to make is how you plan to move. Are you going to move the things yourself or use a removal company. Although, by moving yourself you will cut down your moving costs, removal companies like ourselves, can take the stress out of moving day. Why not just leave the hard work to the removal company and enjoy your first day in your new home, leaving any worries behind.

Step 2 – Hiring movers

If you do decide to hire a removal company, you will need to understand what type of move you are making, depending on you distance and location. Our professional removal service works with you to tailor your removal to your specific requirements. We can provide you with free expert removals advice. We will ensure your removal turns up on time and that your possessions are handled with care and respect at all times. Many removal companies offer other services as well as removals so make sure you research thoroughly to find the ones that fulfil all your needs.

Top tip: Make sure you ask as many questions as possible to ensure you know you are hiring the right service for you.

Step 3 – Set a timeline and inventory

planning your move

Moving can be complicated with a lot of different steps to take. Create a moving timeline with all the tasks you need to complete and when by to make sure you are on track. By doing so you are ensuring that you aren’t missing anything vital during the big move. Creating an inventory list is also helpful to know what you have packed, when you start packing, so you can simply just tick it off your list so you don’t leave anything behind. Once it’s ticked too you will no longer have to worry about it.

Step 4 – Set a moving budget

budgeting for moving home

A lot of people don’t take into consideration a moving budget as many of us don’t like to think about the extra costs we may have to endure. By setting a moving budget you can keep on track with your spending and possibly save money by shopping around to get the best deals for you within your set limit. A healthy budget will make sure you don’t spend more than you can afford to on moving day. Let’s face it, you’ll probably appreciate the extra cash for redecorating purposes.

Step 5 – Sorting through your stuff

After sorting out the technicalities, it’s time to realistically think whether you need that jumper that you’ve not worn for a few years or those piles and piles of old bills. Decluttering and clearing out can be very therapeutic and will allow for many more new things in your new home. This doesn’t mean you have to get rid of everything, but just the things that you probably still won’t use in a few years time. After all, a new place means new stuff! Once you’ve decided on the things to keep and throw out, you’ll need to think of where to put it. Consider boot sales and charity shops so the things you once loved can be loved again. Or, if you definitely can’t part ways, why not look into storage solutions so you can store your possessions away safely for when you may need it again.

Step 6 – Packing supplies

packaging materials

To ensure your goods arrive safe and sound, make sure you get the right packing supplies. Some items you may want to consider are, boxes, packing tape, wrapping paper, floor coverings, a mattress cover and even a portable wardrobe. Our removal boxes and packing materials are cost-effective, durable and reliable. You have options of either packing your things yourself or we provide a packing service where you can hire us to do your packing professionally for you.

Step 7 – Dismantle furniture

This can be a daunting task that some companies provide a service for. We at Coastline Removals, can take the stress out of that with our moving service if you require. Who needs the added stress of furniture building, especially when there is so much unpacking to do!

Step 8 – Start packing

Time to start packing! When packing make sure you have your inventory list to hand so you can tick off things as you go, to make sure you are only taking the things with you that you really need. Make sure you have a box of essentials so that when you get to your new home that you can all sit down and make a cup of tea. This will allow you to re energise before you get to unpacking anything.

Top tip: Be sure to label your boxes when you are packing so you know which box is for which room.

Step 9 – Organise your move

planning your move

Before you leave your old home behind, ensure you have paid any outstanding bills, and cancelled any subscriptions, if you have them. Have your mail redirected to your new address and do any meter readings to tell your energy suppliers. Call the removal company for any last-minute changes and double check they have the correct moving date to ensure moving day goes without a hiccup.

Step 10 – Moving day!

After making one final check of your list you can now make the move. Once arrived, put each box in its relevant room then sit down and relax.
