There’s no better time to have a clear out than before the big move. It’s the perfect time to create the home you’ve always wanted and provide peace of mind that you’ve always envisioned. And let’s not forget, they do say a tidy home equals a tidy mind.

But where do you start when you have an entire home to pack up? We’ve got some tips that will help make the most of your home move.

Do You Need To Bring Everything?

If you’re part of a growing family, then the likelihood is that your children will be growing out of many of their old clothes and toys too. You may be thinking of some new design ideas for their rooms in the new house. So, ask yourself whether they will need all the current furniture, toys, etc that are currently in their childhood bedroom. Can you see these items of furniture working in the new space? Do they still use these items regularly? These are the sort of questions you can ask about these items, not forgetting to ask your children if they would definitely like to keep something.

Start With Packing Items You Need The Least

If you want to start packing, but have no idea where to start, why not begin packing the items you know you won’t need over the upcoming weeks. This could include clothes, decorative pieces or even some furniture you could pack up ready for your move in day. Then, overtime, you can build up your packing bit by bit, avoiding the panic of packing everything in one day. Remember to pack your boxes with durable packing materials that will support your items when in transit.

Set Rules

If you wish to take less items to your new home and “travel light”, you can assess your wardrobe as a starting point. Haven’t worn an item of clothing in the past year? Donate, sell or give to a friend or family member! You can carry the same practice into other items in your home too, such as kitchenware.

You could carry the four box method when approaching your packing. This includes an area for Keep, Donate, Sell and Throw. This is particularly handy if you are looking to conduct a deep declutter of your belongings before you move.

Before you make your decisions, if an item does have sentimental value to you, make sure to double check if this is something you really want to part with.

Start Packing As Soon As You Can

Packing every item in your home can be very time consuming so if you’re planning to get through a load of decluttering at the same time it’s best to start as early as you can. Think of it as a cathartic organisation for your mind, helping you to make the very best of this busy time in your life. It’s recommended to begin packing a couple weeks before moving day. This will ensure you can dip a little into packing daily, perhaps focusing on room by room.
